Return to Campus

Below stated are our plans and schedule for the safe return of students and employees to campus. The Senior Leadership Team and our Health and Safety Offices have been working throughout the summer to make it a smooth process.

There will be 3 phases to our return to campus:

 Phase 1: (September 1-30, 2020)

  • All classes will be online for September.
  • Students will be allowed in designated areas on campus by appointment only. Please note: some departments will only conduct meetings using Zoom or telephone at this time, so schedule an appointment before coming to campus.
  • Study spaces, the LC, and computer labs will remain closed.

 Phase 2: (beginning October 1, 2020)

  • Most classes will continue online. A small number of classes will transition to face-to-face on campus. You will be notified by email if you are registered in one of these classes.
  • Some parts of the campus will reopen for students. You will be notified by email which spaces have reopened.

Phase 3: (TBD)

  • All classes will be face-to-face on campus.
  • The campus will be fully open for students and visitors.

What guides our decisions for re-integration of students, staff and faculty back to campus?

  • Guidelines and directives provided by Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Ministry of Interior and Ministry Of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs.
  • Recommendations from World Health Organization and Centres for Disease Control (best practices).
  • Suggestions from sister organizations in Qatar (College of the North Atlantic - Qatar, Qatar University, Qatar Foundation).
  • Recommendations from University of Calgary.
  • Direction from UCQ Senior Leadership Team and Health and Safety Specialist.

Tuesday, March 10, 3:30 pm:

The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) campus is closed to current students beginning March 10, 2020 until further notice. Effective immediately, all on-campus theory classes will be delivered online. All student clinical placements are suspended until further notice.

Information regarding specific courses and other learnings will be communicated to students via e-mail as soon as possible.

The University’s priority is to minimize any disruption to our students’ ongoing academic progress.

This campus closure for students includes physical (on campus) access to the Learning Commons, Library, classrooms, and all other on-campus study spaces.

This action follows a statement issued by the State of Qatar’s Government Communications Office regarding the suspension of all classes for students in the State of Qatar as a precautionary measure to limit the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

March 5, 2020

The University of Calgary in Qatar is closely following the news of COVID-19 and its impact to the health and safety of our employees and students. We are in continuous contact with health, safety, and risk management personnel from our UCalgary main campus along with experts here in Qatar.

For Employees:

As part of normal precautionary measures, the University is asking that any UCQ employee who has recently traveled to China, Hong Kong, Japan, Iran, Italy, South Korea, or Singapore (or have family members or guests in your home who have recently travelled from one of these countries) to please advise your departmental supervisor.

Consistent with the University of Calgary main campus  we have asked that employees suspend or cancel all work related travel to these countriesPlease familiarize yourself with Qatar Airways' current travel alert regarding self-isolation upon return from certain countries and the University of Calgary’s own recommendation that anyone arriving back from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Iran, Italy, South Korea, or Singapore is to self-isolate for 14 days.

Please take basic preventative measures as you would during cold and flu season. The World Health Organization and other trusted sources have several recommendations to stay healthy.

For Students:

We are developing plans to support your learning over the coming months. At the current time, there is no expected interruption to your studies. If that changes, we will notify you.

What you can do to protect yourself and others:

  • Avoid travel to the following countries: China, Japan, Hong Kong, Italy, Iran, Singapore and South Korea.
  • If you have travelled to one of these countries in the past 14 days, please self-isolate and DO NOT come to campus or report for clinical shifts in health care facilities. Notify your faculty member immediately.
  • If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms stay at home.. Notify your faculty member of your absence from class or clinical.
